January Weather in Amed: A Closer Look
January is Amed's wettest month yet it remains dramatically drier than most of Bali. The rain shadow effect of Mount Agung β Bali's 3,031 m sacred volcano looming just 15 km to the southwest β deflects much of the wet-season precipitation. Amed receives around 160 mm in January compared to Denpasar's 345 mm. Temperatures are warm at 32Β°C daytime with overnight lows of 25Β°C and humidity around 78%. Afternoon showers arrive regularly but are often short-lived. The volcanic black sand beaches east of the main village see fewer visitors than any other month, giving the string of fishing hamlets β Amed, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, and Selang β a genuinely authentic feel. The USAT Liberty wreck at nearby Tulamben (30 minutes west) is still diveable on calm days; January's reduced visibility of 8β12 metres makes it less ideal than peak season but the wreck's marine life, including large schools of fish, moray eels, and resident turtles, is present year-round. Snorkeling directly off Amed's Jemeluk bay is gentler and shallower, accessible even for beginners. Budget accommodation rates are at their annual low. The volcanic landscape around Amed is at its most dramatic in the wet season, with wisps of cloud catching on Mount Agung's flanks.
