Ubud Weather Averages

Dry season arrives. Mornings can still be misty but afternoons are sunny.

April is when Ubud transforms. The dry season arrives and rainfall drops sharply to around 100mm across just 10 days — less than a third of February's total. At 600m elevation, the highland air feels genuinely fresh and cool in the mornings, with temperatures ranging from 22°C lows to 29°C highs. Humidity falls to 80%, and the afternoon mist that characterised January and February is replaced with clear views of the valley, rice terraces, and on particularly clear days, a distant glimpse of Gunung Agung's peak. The UV index is 7. The rice fields of Tegalalang and Jatiluwih World Heritage site are at a photogenic mid-cycle stage — fields are being planted or growing at different heights, creating a patchwork of green. Saraswati Day on April 4 brings one of the most visually spectacular ceremonies in Ubud, with the Royal Palace and major temples stacked with towering flower and fruit offerings. The Bali Spirit Festival in nearby Gianyar draws international wellness and yoga practitioners.

Driest month. Cool and clear — perfect highland weather.

August is the driest month in Ubud with just 30mm of rainfall over 4 days and the lowest humidity of the year at 72%. Temperatures remain at 27°C highs and 20°C lows — Ubud is genuinely cool by Indonesian standards. The UV index is 6. The highland air is exceptionally clear and the surrounding landscape, though entering the drier phase of the season, still shows patches of intense green in the lower terraces. This is peak international tourist season with the highest prices and occupancy of the year. Indonesian Independence Day on August 17 fills Ubud's central crossroads and village squares with red-and-white decorations and community sports events. Despite the peak-season crowds, Ubud's highland character ensures that walking 10 minutes from the main street puts you into quiet rice paddy lanes with almost no other tourists. Early morning light on the terraces is exceptional in August's clear, low-humidity atmosphere.

Peak Season Cultural Performances

Full rainy season but holiday visitors arrive for Christmas.

December brings the full force of the wet season back to Ubud's highlands. Rainfall reaches approximately 300mm across 23 days — the second wettest month of the year. Temperatures drop slightly to 28°C highs and 22°C lows as cloud cover becomes almost constant, and humidity climbs to 86%. The UV index is 7. Heavy afternoon rain is the daily reality, and morning mist in the valleys becomes a defining feature of the highland landscape. Despite the weather, December brings a festive international crowd to Ubud for Christmas and New Year — the combination of rain, rice terrace mist, and holiday atmosphere creates a genuinely magical setting. The Melasti pre-Nyepi purification ceremonies begin their cycle in late December in some villages, although the main ceremonies fall in March 2026. Ubud's restaurants, wellness retreats, and cooking schools run holiday programs with some of the year's most creative menus and events. The rice fields are at their most flooded and deeply green.

New Year's Eve

Still very wet but slightly less rain than January.

February remains firmly in the wet season in Ubud, with around 300mm of rainfall over 23 days. Temperatures hold at 28°C highs and 22°C lows with humidity at 87% — the air is thick and warm even though the temperatures themselves are moderate by tropical standards. Morning mist is frequent, often sitting in the valley below Campuhan Ridge in photogenic layers. The UV index is 7 in February — higher than January due to the increased sun angle at this latitude. Rain tends to arrive in substantial afternoon bursts, typically between 1pm and 5pm, with some days seeing continuous rain from late morning. The rice fields and jungle around Ubud are at peak green saturation in February — the paddies in Tegalalang and Jatiluwih are extraordinarily lush. The Chinese New Year period (mid-February in 2026) is marked in some of Ubud's restaurants and hotels with special menus and decorations, though it's primarily observed in coastal Denpasar and Singaraja.

Chinese New Year

Tumpek Kandang

Very wet highland month. Frequent heavy rain and morning mist. Lush green rice terraces at their most vibrant.

January is the wettest month in Ubud, with approximately 380mm of rainfall spread across 28 days — nearly every day brings at least some rain. Sitting at around 600 metres above sea level in the central highlands, Ubud receives significantly more rainfall than coastal Bali, and January is its most intense period. Daytime temperatures reach 28°C but evenings and mornings can drop to 22°C — notably cooler than Denpasar's coastal heat. Humidity peaks at 88%. Morning mist rolls through the rice terraces and jungle valleys in spectacular fashion, often dissipating by mid-morning. The UV index in January is 6 — lower than coastal areas due to the cloud cover but still meaningful on clear breaks. Rain falls heavily in the afternoon and often continues through the night. Waterfalls in the greater Ubud area — Tegenungan, Kanto Lampo, Tibumana — are at their most powerful and dramatic in January. The highland microclimate means even on clear mornings the air retains a freshness impossible to find at sea level.

Hari Raya Siwa Ratri

Coolest month in Ubud. Clear skies, minimal rain, refreshing temperatures.

July is the coolest month in Ubud and peak dry season at its most intense. Rainfall is just 60mm over 5 days, and temperatures drop to their annual lows of 27°C highs and 20°C lows. Humidity falls to 73%. The UV index is 6. The highland air in July carries a distinctive freshness — some mornings at sunrise feel more akin to a temperate climate than a tropical one, with temperatures below 20°C before 7am. Views are crystal clear, rice fields are either harvested or in active growth at various stages creating a mosaic of colours, and the surrounding hills and Mount Agung are visible with unusual clarity. July is peak tourist season globally, and Ubud fills with international visitors. The village streets of Ubud centre, Penestanan, and Campuhan see the highest pedestrian traffic of the year. Despite the crowds, the highland setting means Ubud never feels as oppressively packed as the south coast resort areas.

Peak International Tourist Season

Dry and cool. Some of the most comfortable weather of the year.

June is one of Ubud's finest months. Rainfall is minimal at 60mm over 7 days and the highland climate is at its most comfortable: 28°C highs, 21°C lows, and humidity at just 75%. The UV index is 6. Early mornings regularly drop to 19–20°C, making a light jacket genuinely necessary for a 6am rice terrace walk. The views from Campuhan Ridge, the Subak terraces, and any elevated viewpoint are exceptionally clear — Mount Agung is visible on most mornings from eastern Ubud. Southerly trade winds add an extra freshness to the highland air, making June the most physically comfortable month to explore Ubud on foot or by bicycle. The Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar (June 13–July 11) means regular bus connections run from Ubud for visitors who want to attend the performances. Galungan on June 17 transforms Ubud's roads with bamboo penjor poles and draws Balinese families back to their home villages for multiple days of ceremony — witnessing this in Ubud is among the most authentic cultural experiences in Bali.

Bali Arts Festival (PKB)

The most important festival in the Balinese Hindu calendar marks the victory of good over evil; Ubud's streets are transformed by thousands of penjor poles and family temple preparations, creating an atmosphere of genuine spiritual celebration

Galungan

Closes the Galungan festival period ten days later; yellow rice offerings and morning temple prayers mark the ancestral spirits' return to the divine realm

Kuningan

Rainy season easing. Nyepi celebrations often fall in March.

March is a pivotal month in Ubud's weather cycle. Rainfall eases to approximately 260mm across 21 days — still substantial, but the wet season is clearly retreating. Temperatures warm slightly to 29°C highs and 22°C lows, and mornings increasingly feature clear blue skies before clouds build. Humidity sits at 85%. The UV index climbs to 7 as the sun's angle increases. The most culturally significant month of the year for all of Bali falls around March's middle: Nyepi, the Day of Silence on March 19, 2026, preceded by the dramatic Ogoh-Ogoh parade on March 18. In Ubud, the Ogoh-Ogoh effigies are built by each village banjar and are often among the most artistically elaborate in Bali — the highland craft tradition shows. Ubud's Melasti procession typically involves a journey to the Petanu or Pakerisan rivers rather than the sea, as the sacred river sources hold equivalent purification significance in the highland spiritual geography. March is also when rice planting begins across many of Ubud's subak (traditional irrigation cooperative) fields after the wet season.

Excellent weather. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, minimal rain.

May is one of Ubud's premier months. The dry season is established, rainfall is around 100mm over 9 days (mostly brief evening showers), and the highland climate delivers its most comfortable conditions: 29°C highs, 22°C lows, and humidity at just 77%. The UV index drops to 6 — less intense than April's. Morning air at 600m is genuinely refreshing, carrying the fragrance of the surrounding jungle and the occasional distant smell of wood smoke from village cooking fires. Views of the Campuhan valley and terraced rice fields are exceptional, and trail conditions are near-perfect for trekking and cycling. The Ubud Food Festival at the end of May (May 29–31) draws international chefs and food writers to Taman Kuliner in Ubud, making it one of the region's best culinary events. Tumpek Uduh on May 23 sees elaborate offerings placed at trees around every family compound in Ubud's villages. May also sits at the sweet spot where prices have not yet hit the June-August peak.

Ubud Food Festival

Rainy season starts in earnest. Lush and green everywhere.

November marks the firm return of the wet season to Ubud's highlands. Rainfall climbs to around 200mm over 18 days, and the daily afternoon rain pattern re-establishes clearly. Temperatures are 29°C highs and 22°C lows with humidity at 82%. The UV index is 7 as the sun's angle approaches the wet season position. Morning mist returns to the valleys below Campuhan and around Petanu River, and the rice paddies are once again flooded and vibrantly green. Trail conditions deteriorate from mid-November with mud appearing on the forest and ridge paths. November is one of the quietest months in Ubud for international tourists, creating a stillness in the village that reveals the actual pace of Balinese highland life: ceremonies, markets, cooking, weaving, and farming continue regardless of the weather. This is an excellent time for intensive arts and cultural study — cooking, painting, woodcarving, and silversmithing classes have full availability and instructors have time to go deep.

Transition month. Afternoon showers returning but mornings mostly clear.

October is a transitional month in Ubud, shifting back toward the wet season. Rainfall increases to around 70mm over 13 days as afternoon showers begin to reappear. Temperatures warm to 29°C highs and 22°C lows, and humidity climbs to 77%. The UV index is 7 as the sun angle increases towards the wet season. Mornings remain largely clear and dry through most of October, with rain arriving predictably in the early to mid-afternoon. The highland landscape begins to shift back to intense green — water returns to the rice paddies and the terraces come back to life after the driest period. The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (October 21–25) is arguably the most important literary gathering in Southeast Asia, drawing leading authors, journalists, and intellectuals to Ubud's traditional venues and pavilions. October also has the Bali Kite Festival activity continuing in coastal areas, and the cultural calendar picks up with ceremony frequency rising ahead of the wet season.

September is a superb month in Ubud — dry-season conditions persist with only 50mm of rain across 8 days, but the peak-season crowds begin their retreat after the European and Australian school holiday window closes. Temperatures edge back up to 28°C highs and 21°C lows, and humidity rises marginally to 74% as the season slowly shifts. The UV index is 6. The highland landscape remains green and clear, and the combination of excellent weather with declining tourist numbers makes September arguably the smartest month to visit Ubud. Hotel rates drop 20–30% from August, the Tegalalang terraces can be walked without a queue, and restaurant tables at Locavore and other premium venues become bookable again without weeks of advance notice. The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival is confirmed for October 21–25, meaning some festival-goers begin arriving in Ubud in late September.
