VPN in Bali & Indonesia
Last updated: March 2026
Overview
Indonesia has moderate internet censorship that directly affects travelers in Bali. The Indonesian government blocks access to several popular websites and services at the ISP level, including Reddit, some adult content sites, and periodically certain other platforms. While major social media (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube) generally works fine, the government has temporarily blocked these during political unrest in the past — most notably during the 2019 Papua protests when WhatsApp and Instagram were restricted. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a practical tool for any Bali visitor: it unblocks restricted sites, secures your data on the countless open WiFi networks at cafés, co-working spaces, and hotels, and lets you access your home streaming libraries and banking services. VPN use is legal in Indonesia, though the government has attempted to restrict some VPN protocols. Using a VPN for personal privacy and security is not prosecuted.
Essential Tips
Install and test your VPN before flying to Bali — some VPN provider websites may load slowly or be partially blocked in Indonesia, making setup harder on arrival.
Reddit is permanently blocked in Indonesia. If you use Reddit for travel research or community forums, you'll need a VPN to access it in Bali.
For fast speeds while browsing securely, connect to a VPN server in Singapore (closest hub to Bali) — this adds only 10-20ms latency compared to 150-200ms for European servers.
Free WiFi at cafés in Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak is usually unencrypted or uses shared passwords. Always activate your VPN before doing online banking, accessing email, or logging into any accounts on these networks.
If you want to access your home Netflix library (Dutch, US, UK, etc.), connect to a VPN server in your home country. Without a VPN, you'll see the Indonesian Netflix catalog.
Avoid free VPN apps — they often log and sell your data, have severe speed limits, and may inject ads. A paid VPN costs $3-8/month on yearly plans, roughly the price of a Bintang at a beach bar.
Some European and Australian banks flag Indonesian IP addresses as suspicious and may lock your account. Using a VPN with a server in your home country prevents this issue entirely.
On mobile data (Telkomsel, XL), your connection is already carrier-encrypted, so VPN is less critical for security. However, you still need it to access blocked sites like Reddit or to bypass geo-restrictions on streaming.
Important Information
VPN use is legal in Indonesia for personal privacy and security purposes. The Indonesian government has blocked some VPN protocols in the past, but mainstream VPN providers (using WireGuard or OpenVPN) continue to work reliably in Bali as of 2026. During rare political events, the government has temporarily throttled or blocked social media — during these periods, a VPN is the only way to maintain access. The Pornography Law and the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law govern online content in Indonesia, and illegal activity remains illegal regardless of VPN use. For digital nomads working from Bali's many co-working spaces (Dojo, Outpost, Hubud), a VPN is considered essential for client data protection and professional security.
