Overview

Staying connected in Bali is easy and affordable, with multiple options for mobile data and WiFi. Telkomsel is the largest and most reliable mobile provider with the best coverage across the island, including more remote areas in the north and east, while XL Axiata and Indosat Ooredoo offer competitive data packages at slightly lower prices. Tourist SIM cards with generous data allowances (15-30 GB) are available at the airport, phone shops, and convenience stores for around 100,000-200,000 IDR. WiFi is available at most hotels, cafes, coworking spaces, and restaurants in tourist areas, though speeds can vary significantly — dedicated coworking spaces in Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak generally offer the most reliable high-speed connections.

Essential Tips

1

Purchase a local SIM card at the official Telkomsel or XL store in the Ngurah Rai Airport arrivals hall for a hassle-free setup. Bring your passport as it is required for SIM card registration in Indonesia.

2

Telkomsel tourist SIM packages (called 'simPATI Tourist') typically include 15-25 GB of data valid for 30 days, costing around 100,000-150,000 IDR. Top-ups can be done at convenience stores (Indomaret, Alfamart) or through the MyTelkomsel app.

3

If you prefer not to swap your physical SIM, eSIM options like Airalo, Holafly, or Ubigi let you purchase a Bali/Indonesia data plan before you arrive and activate it instantly upon landing. Prices typically range from 5-15 USD for 1-5 GB.

4

Coworking spaces like Dojo Bali (Canggu), Outpost (Ubud/Canggu), and Hubud (Ubud) offer reliable high-speed internet with speeds of 50-100 Mbps, day passes from around 150,000-250,000 IDR.

5

WiFi in budget accommodations and rural areas can be slow and unreliable. Having a local SIM with a data plan as a backup is highly recommended, especially if you need to work remotely or navigate with maps.

6

Google Maps works well offline in Bali — download the Bali map for offline use before heading to areas with poor signal coverage like the central highlands or far east coast.

Important Information

Indonesia requires biometric registration for all SIM cards, so you must present your passport when purchasing one. Ensure your phone is unlocked before buying a local SIM. Telkomsel has the widest 4G coverage across Bali, including remote areas, making it the safest choice for travelers heading beyond the southern tourist zone. Most data packages expire after 30 days regardless of remaining data.
