Power Plugs & Electricity

Overview

Indonesia, including Bali, uses the European-style Type C and Type F electrical plugs with two round pins, operating at 230 volts and 50 Hz. Travelers from the UK, USA, Australia, and other countries with different plug standards will need a travel adapter. Most modern laptops, phone chargers, and camera chargers are dual voltage (100-240V) and only require a plug adapter, but appliances like hair dryers and straighteners from North America may need a voltage converter or could be damaged by the higher voltage. Power outages still occur occasionally, particularly during heavy rainstorms in the wet season, though they are usually brief and most hotels and villas have backup generators.

Essential Tips

1

Bring a universal travel adapter or one specifically designed for European Type C/F sockets. These are widely available before your trip and can be harder to find for a fair price in Bali's tourist areas.

2

Check the label on your electronic devices before plugging them in. If it reads 'Input: 100-240V', you only need a plug adapter. If it reads '110V' or '120V' only, you will also need a voltage converter to avoid damaging the device.

3

Consider bringing a small power strip or multi-port USB charger, as some budget accommodations have limited power outlets available in the room.

4

Many mid-range and upscale hotels provide universal power outlets or have adapters available at the front desk. Check with your accommodation before purchasing an adapter.

5

Carry a portable power bank (10,000-20,000 mAh) for long day trips, especially if you rely on your phone for navigation, ride-hailing apps, and photography. Charging opportunities may be limited during outdoor excursions.

6

Brief power outages (5-30 minutes) are not uncommon, especially during the rainy season (November to March). If you are working remotely, coworking spaces with backup power and UPS systems provide more reliable electricity than cafes or budget accommodations.

Important Information

Bali uses 230V/50Hz electricity with Type C and Type F plug sockets (two round pins, same as most of continental Europe). Travelers from North America (110V), the UK (Type G), and Australia (Type I) will need an adapter. Plugging a 110V-only appliance into a 230V outlet without a converter will likely damage or destroy the device. Power surges can occur after outages, so consider using a surge protector for expensive electronics like laptops.
